As a recent graduate, I have watched Webb dive off a cliff. When I applied Webb was in the top 40 private schools in America, now they are not even in the top 100. This decline is largely due to an incompetent administration that seems more interested in social media appearances than in student well-being.
Their claims about diversity feel like they are from a decade ago since around 60% of the school is Chinese. They have removed all AP classes in favor of their so-called “Advanced Studies” courses, eliminated all computer science offerings, and discouraged students from pursuing independent interests like outside competitions or events. Activities are so underfunded that students often have to finance school-affiliated projects themselves. Not only must the students fund thier own projects, the faculty are often incompetent of what they are teaching, in activities and in classes too, most students are self taught.
Student happiness is an even greater concern. There are almost no school events, and campus is dead on weekends. The administration frequently conducts surveys that consistently reveal students are unhappy—only to do nothing in response. Students seeking help from counselors are often left disappointed by the lack of real support. Even being sick is treated as a disciplinary issue; the school will give you Tylenol and force you to attend class, even if you have a fever, and missing a couple classes will have you sitting forced to watch a wall for 5 hours on a Friday night.
Webb frequently boasts about its college matriculation, but they often take credit for achievements they played no role in. College guidance routinely belittles students from aiming high, pushing them to apply to “safer” schools to maintain their precious 100% graduation statistic. This number is misleading—they don’t expel students, they quietly ask them to leave. The college guidance office provides resources only to select promising students, leaving the rest empty-handed, leaving them to do everything on thier own, even as the school sends newsletters bragging about early decision acceptances they had no hand in achieving.
Webb offers only moderate academics at an outrageously steep and ever-increasing price. For your own well-being and future success, I strongly reiterate that you do not apply.
