It is a great school district but I think it is the educated parent with resources whoare supporting their students day in an day out that create the high scores. I see average teaching, not great, not bad, average. No meaningful art or music, science and social studies are mostly straight from the text book, nothing interactive. Many teachers are not doing small group rotations which is KEY. Also, the teachers do not conference with their kids during the writing process! So how do they know what they should have done differently? The writing was subpar at every grade level. She had really kind and , for the most part effective teachers. The exception was kindergarten. She is now a first grade teacher .She yells and screams. My daughter wet her pants beciase she did not let her us the bathroom , a first in her life. She uses a behavioral clip up clip don system which is demoralized and outdated. She needs to retire. Talk to the parent, you will quickly know who I am talking about. Parents complain and somehow she is still there. Unfortunate. New principal has dont a great job in getting things back on track. Solid school largely because of the community.

It’s concerning that phones are being banned while teachers are allowed to vape during class. Instead of restricting students’ access to their phones—which can be important for safety—attention should be directed toward addressing inappropriate behavior by staff. This decision is highly disappointing, and I urge consideration of students’ safety and well-being first.

Pilgrim School

I'm writing as a former teacher and current board member of Pilgrim School. Pilgrim offers an exceptional and distinctive educational experience from Pre-school through 12th grade within a diverse community where inclusivity and belonging are core values. One of Pilgrim’s greatest strengths is its commitment to cultivating each student’s unique talents and interests. Small class sizes create an environment where teachers truly know their students—academically, socially, and emotionally—enabling a personalized approach that fosters both intellectual and personal growth. This individualized attention not only supports students throughout their educational journey but also results in strong college placements each year, a testament to the school’s thoughtful preparation and guidance. Pilgrim School offers a rich, joyful, and forward-thinking education—one that reflects both the uniqueness of Los Angeles and the individual potential of every student.

Keep a close eye on what classes your student is taking and that they are on the path not only to graduate but to meet the basic requirements to attend a 4 year college. I know several students to include my own the are now having to attend a 2 year college because the school failed to make sure they had all required classes to meet the standards of a 4 year college. Overall my kids seem to like the school and most of the teachers fine, so no issues there but the school counselors switch out every year and obviously do not communicate with each other or actually pay attention to their classes to ensure their success.

My experience with Pleasant Valley Elementary has been very positive. They are doing commendable work with the resources they have, and I would certainly recommend this school to other families. It's wonderful how genuinely excited the children get about learning here! Additionally, they offer enriching after-school activities like chess club, choir, and track and field. Events such as Literacy Night, Multicultural Night, and the Back to School Ice Cream Social are fantastic for fostering a stronger connection between families and the school. The teachers are consistently respectful, highly supportive, and truly inspire students to learn. Furthermore, having a school counselor who assists with emotional learning is a significant benefit. They do an excellent job supporting students' mental health and emotional well-being. Safety is a priority here, and it's clear they have it well-managed, especially with the recent facility upgrades like new cameras throughout the campus. This definitely provides peace of mind. Regarding family engagement, the school is exceptional at welcoming families as partners. They actively collaborate with the PTA and other community groups to build the community, showcasing their strong commitment to family involvement! One observation, not a fault of the school, is that with such a diverse cultural student body, it can sometimes be challenging for parents to fully connect with other families, even for those who would love to be more involved. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this school, as it continues to improve and shows great promise for the future. Go Pilots!

Racial tension is a serious problem here, making the school's climate feel negative and exclusionary. The resulting stress on our child and our family has been immense. We had hoped for a welcoming environment, and this falls incredibly short.

I'm absolutely thrilled with Highland Prep West! The teachers are passionate and dedicated, and it's clear they genuinely care about each student's growth. Their strong emphasis on STEM and college prep provides students with a head start towards their future, unlike other high schools.

Serious Concerns Regarding Staff Well being and Child Safety I worked at Epiphany Preschool and feel a responsibility to share my experience, as it involved significant concerns about staff treatment and child safety. While the nature-based curriculum and setting initially seemed promising, my time there was marked by overwhelming conditions and a lack of professional support. I was placed in a classroom with 22 high needs children without additional staffing or mentorship. Behavioral incidents were frequent and severe, including instances of aggression toward staff. The school was not equipped to manage these situations safely or supportively. Despite being new to the preschool system, I had over 15 years of experience with children and took my role seriously. However, I experienced burnout and eventually a serious mental health crisis. While I was hospitalized and unable to communicate, the school terminated my employment via email without contacting my emergency contact or checking on my well being actions that raise ethical and legal concerns. No effort was made to support me during or after this medical emergency. Attempts to retrieve my personal belongings were ignored. Some items were never returned. I am now sharing this after significant time and recovery, and I believe families and potential staff deserve transparency. I would not recommend this workplace to educators, nor would I feel comfortable enrolling a child in a school where behavioral concerns, staffing shortages, and crises are handled in this way. While other reviews may reflect internal perspectives, mine is from someone who was on the ground, doing the work. Please look beyond the appearance and ask the hard questions about training, staff support, safety protocols, and turnover. I hope this helps others avoid the same harm.

Growing up going to Catholic schools I wasn't sure what to expect at CCLS. I can honestly say I would work 5 jobs if I had to so my kids could attend K-8. Our experience has been that good. The staff are excellent, the curriculum is challenging and rewarding to our kids, and the community is beyond anything I have ever experienced. CCLS is one of a kind and the association churches as well. I feel very blessed that we found CCLS.
